Canada Immigration Roadmap
The complete step-by-step journey to Canadian permanent residence, based on official IRCC procedures for Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs, and other immigration pathways.
Eligibility & Program Selection
- Take the Come to Canada questionnaire to find your programs
- Choose between Express Entry, PNP, Family Sponsorship, or other pathways
- Check minimum requirements for your selected program
- Determine the right NOC TEER category for your occupation
Language Tests & ECA
- Take approved language test (IELTS / CELPIP / TEF Canada) for English or French
- Achieve minimum CLB score required by your program (CLB 7 for FSW, CLB 5 for CEC)
- Get your Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) from a designated organization
- Keep language test results valid — they expire after 2 years
Document Preparation
- Gather passport, work experience letters, and reference letters
- Obtain police certificates from every country you've lived in
- Prepare proof of funds showing sufficient settlement funds
- Collect provincial nomination documents if applying through PNP
- Get a valid job offer from a Canadian employer (if applicable)
Create Profile & Enter Pool
- Sign in to your IRCC secure account
- Enter your personal reference code from the Come to Canada tool
- Submit your Express Entry profile with accurate personal details
- Update your profile every time your situation changes
- You have 60 days to complete and submit your profile
Score Calculation & ITA
- You're ranked in the pool using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)
- CRS scores are based on age, education, work experience, and language
- Receive extra CRS points for provincial nomination (600) or valid job offer
- IRCC holds regular Express Entry draws — highest scores receive ITA
- If nominated through PNP, you get an additional 600 CRS points
Permanent Residence Application
- You have 60 days to submit your full PR application after receiving ITA
- Fill out all mandatory fields on the online application form
- Upload clear scans of all required documents from your checklist
- Pay processing fee, Right of Permanent Residence Fee, and biometrics fee
- Include medical exam results from an IRCC panel physician
Biometrics, Medical & Background Check
- Give your fingerprints and photo (biometrics) within 30 days of the request
- Complete an Immigration Medical Exam (IME) with a panel physician
- IRCC verifies your application for completeness and accuracy
- Background and security checks are conducted on all applicants
- IRCC may request additional documents via your secure account
Approval, COPR & Landing
- Receive Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and visa if approved
- Pay the Right of Permanent Residence fee if not already paid
- Prepare for your landing — the final step to become a permanent resident
- Get your SIN, health card, and provincial ID upon arrival
- Apply for a Permanent Resident Card (PR Card) — your official PR document
