How to Apply for a PRTD

Determine eligibility: you must be a permanent resident outside Canada without a valid PR card
Download and complete the application form IMM 5529 (Application for a Permanent Resident Travel Document)
Gather supporting documents: proof of PR status (Confirmation of PR or valid PR card), passport, travel itinerary, and two photos
Pay the $50 CAD fee online and include the payment receipt with your application
Submit the application to the Canadian visa office responsible for your current country of residence
Provide your current mailing address and contact information for the document to be sent to you
Use the PRTD within its validity period to return to Canada

Requirements for PRTD

You are a permanent resident of Canada
You are currently outside Canada
You do not have a valid PR card (lost, expired, never issued, or in process)
You need to return to Canada by commercial carrier (plane, boat, train, bus)
You meet the residency obligation (730 days in the last 5 years) — or are applying for a PRTD to return and comply
Your removal order has not become effective (if applicable)

Required Documents

Completed application form IMM 5529
Valid passport or travel document
Two PR card–sized photos (50 mm x 70 mm) meeting Canada Immigration specifications
Proof of PR status (copy of Confirmation of PR, valid PR card, or landing record)
Travel itinerary or flight booking
Payment receipt of $50 CAD
Police certificate (if requested)
Supporting documents for residency obligation (utility bills, employment records, tax returns)

A PRTD is valid for a single entry into Canada. If you leave Canada again without obtaining a valid PR card, you will need to apply for a new PRTD. Processing times vary by visa office — apply well in advance of your planned travel date. You cannot apply for a PRTD from within Canada; you must be outside the country. If you have a valid PR card, you do not need a PRTD — use your PR card instead.
