How to Request Urgent Processing

Submit your complete PR card application (form IMM 5444 or IMM 5445) with all required documents
Pay the standard $50 PR card fee plus the urgent processing fee online through the Canada Immigration payment portal
Write a cover letter explaining why your request is urgent — include supporting evidence
Provide proof of urgency: flight booking, medical certificate, employer letter, or other documentation
Clearly write "URGENT" on the outside of the envelope if submitting by mail
Include a prepaid Xpresspost envelope from Canada Post for return of your PR card
Follow up with the Canada Immigration Call Centre at 1-888-242-2100 to confirm your urgent request was received

What Qualifies as Urgent?

Urgent travel due to a family emergency (serious illness, death, or critical situation of a family member)
Urgent business travel that cannot be rescheduled and was not previously planned
Job loss or significant financial loss if you cannot travel
Medical emergency requiring treatment outside Canada
You are outside Canada and your PR card is lost, stolen, or expired and you need to return

Evidence You Must Provide

Flight itinerary or booking confirmation with dates within 2–4 weeks of application
Medical certificate or doctor's note explaining the medical emergency (if applicable)
Death certificate or hospital letter for family emergencies
Employer letter confirming urgent business travel
Proof of financial loss if travel is not approved
Police report if the PR card was stolen

Urgent processing is not guaranteed. Canada Immigration officers assess each request on a case-by-case basis. If your request is not approved, your application will be processed under normal timelines (60–90 days). You must submit a complete application — urgent processing does not bypass document or photo requirements.

If you are outside Canada and your PR card is not valid, you may also consider applying for a PR Travel Document (PRTD) at the nearest Canadian visa office, which may be faster than waiting for a new PR card to be mailed.
