How to Get a SIN

Visit any Service Canada office in person with your original documents
Apply online through Service Canada's secure portal (faster for some applicants)
You need: your permanent resident card or confirmation of permanent residence (COPR)
Also bring: passport or other government-issued photo ID
No appointment is needed at most Service Canada locations
You'll receive your SIN confirmation letter immediately (card is no longer issued)

Why You Need a SIN

Required by law to work in Canada — employers must report your SIN
Needed to file your annual tax return with the Canada Revenue Agency
Required to receive government benefits: Child Benefit, GST/HST Credit, Employment Insurance
Banks require a SIN to open interest-bearing accounts (for tax reporting)
Needed for student loans, housing assistance, and many government programs
Keep your SIN confidential — only share with employers, banks, and government agencies

Protecting Your SIN

Your SIN is sensitive personal information — treat it like a password
Never share your SIN over phone, email, or with anyone you don't trust
Only employers, financial institutions, and government agencies need it
Check your credit report yearly for suspicious activity
If your SIN is compromised, contact Service Canada and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre
Lost your SIN confirmation letter? Service Canada can issue a replacement for free

Your SIN is free and lasts a lifetime. Permanent residents receive a SIN starting with the number 5. Service Canada has locations across the country — you can apply at any office regardless of where you live. You only need a SIN to work, file taxes, or access benefits. Do not carry your SIN confirmation letter in your wallet.
