Designated Learning Institutions (DLI)

A Designated Learning Institution (DLI) is a school approved by a provincial or territorial government to host international students. Only DLIs can accept students with a study permit. Canada has over 300 DLIs ranging from universities and colleges to vocational schools.

Why DLI Matters

You must have a letter of acceptance from a DLI to apply for a study permit. Attending a non-DLI can result in permit refusal, loss of status, or removal from Canada.

How to Find a DLI

Visit the official Canada Immigration DLI list online
Search by province, city, or institution name
Verify the DLI number — it starts with 'O' followed by 7 digits
Confirm the school is on the approved list for your level of study
Check if the DLI has a valid study permit compliance status

Requirements for DLI Acceptance

Meet the academic admission requirements of the institution
Provide proof of English or French language proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL, etc.)
Show sufficient funds for tuition and living expenses
Submit a complete application with all supporting documents
Receive a formal letter of acceptance from the DLI

Private institutions must also be on the DLI list. Not all private schools are approved. Always verify your school's DLI status before applying for a study permit.
