Study Permits for Minor Children

Minor children (under 18) in Canada may need a study permit to attend school. The requirements differ depending on whether their parent is already authorized to study or work in Canada. In many cases, minor children can study without a permit if their parent has a valid study or work permit.

When a Study Permit Is Required

Minor child applying from outside Canada — must apply for a study permit
Parent is not authorized to work or study in Canada — child needs a permit
Child is in Canada and parent's status changes to student or worker — may be exempt
Children attending pre-school or kindergarten — no study permit needed

Application Requirements

Letter of acceptance from a school in Canada
Valid passport for the child
Proof of sufficient funds (parent's bank statements, job letter)
Parent's valid study permit or work permit (if applicable)
Custodianship declaration if parent is not coming to Canada
Medical exam (if child will be in Canada for more than 6 months)
Birth certificate showing parent-child relationship

Applying with a Parent

If a parent is applying for a study or work permit, the minor child can often be included in the same application. Children already in Canada can attend school without a separate study permit if their parent holds a valid study or work permit until the child turns 18.

Each province sets the age of majority (18 or 19). Check your province's rules. Minor children must attend school until age 16 or 18 depending on the province.
