How to Apply for a SIN

Ensure you have valid immigration status (study permit, work permit, or PR card)
Visit a Service Canada centre in person with original documents
Bring your primary identity document (work permit, study permit, or PR card)
Provide a secondary ID if required — passport or provincial ID
Complete the SIN application form at the counter (no appointment needed at most locations)
Receive your SIN confirmation letter immediately — no card is issued anymore
Use your SIN for employment, tax filing, and government benefits

Do not share your SIN unnecessarily. Only provide it to employers, banks, and government agencies when required. Keep your SIN confirmation letter in a safe place.
